My Take: 8/10

Parental Rating: Younger Teens and Families

If you worry that a third entry in a franchise might feel like a tired retread, prepare to be completely delighted. This installment breathes fresh life into the franchise by introducing a fantastic time-travel plot that takes the story all the way back to 1969. It brilliantly honors the signature style and humor of the original movie while adding a surprising amount of emotional depth and backstory that ties the characters together beautifully, making it an incredibly satisfying watch for the whole household.

The story kicks off when a ruthless, one-armed alien criminal named Boris the Animal escapes from a high-security lunar prison. Seeking ultimate revenge, Boris travels back in time to assassinate a young Agent K in 1969, which alters history, causes K to disappear in the present day, and leaves Earth completely defenseless against an alien invasion. Because Agent J is the only one who mysteriously remembers his partner ever existed, he must take a literal leap of faith and time-travel back to 1969 to save K's life. Along the way, J must team up with the 29-year-old version of K, navigate the vibrant culture of the late 1960s, and protect a sweet, fifth-dimensional alien named Griffin who holds the key to protecting the planet's future.

The writing is incredibly clever, using the time-travel premise to create a wonderful, nostalgic playground. The script does a fantastic job of contrasting J’s modern, fast-talking New York style with the vintage retro aesthetics of 1969, finding brilliant comedy in everything from historical landmarks to vintage agency technology. The narrative moves at a crisp, energetic pace, expertly balancing high-stakes action sequences with a genuinely moving mystery about why K became the grumpy, guarded partner J knows in the present day. The creature designs once again shine, blending classic 1960s sci-fi monster nostalgia with sleek, modern visual effects.

The acting in this installment is nothing short of spectacular, driven by a legendary casting choice. Josh Brolin joins the cast as the young Agent K, and his performance is an absolute masterclass; he channels Tommy Lee Jones's exact vocal inflections, deadpan delivery, and physical mannerisms so perfectly that you instantly believe he is the exact same character. Will Smith brings his signature charismatic energy and perfect comedic timing, sharing a fantastic, fresh chemistry with Brolin that mirrors the classic odd-couple dynamic brilliantly. Michael Stuhlbarg is an absolute standout as the quirky, endearing Griffin, bringing a wonderful warmth to the show, while Jemaine Clement makes for a wonderfully eccentric and menacing villain as Boris.

The Parental Lens

Sharing this time-travel adventure with younger teens offers an excellent opportunity to explore how history, setting, and different eras shape our perspective. Navigating the world of 1969 allows the characters to see how society and technology have evolved over decades. It serves as a fantastic baseline for a casual family conversation: if you could visit any era from the past, how do you think living in that time would change the way you view our modern daily life, and what lessons can we learn from history to make better choices today?

The core narrative also offers a beautiful, mature look at understanding the people in our lives by learning about their past journeys and hidden struggles. Throughout the show, J discovers that K's gruff exterior is the result of deep personal sacrifices and a pivotal event that happened when he was a young man. It is a natural setup to talk about empathy and family history with your young teens: how can understanding that adults and parents have their own complex histories, challenges, and defining moments help us build deeper, more supportive relationships within our own families?

Finally, Griffin's unique ability to see multiple timelines highlights the profound impact of small, individual choices on the big picture. The movie demonstrates that everyday acts of courage, kindness, and loyalty ripple outward to create a better future for everyone. For young people navigating their own goals, social circles, and daily decisions, it serves as an inspiring, non-preachy reminder that our personal choices matter, and standing up for your friends and doing the right thing in the present moment shapes the path of who you become tomorrow.

My Final Take

This movie is a triumphant return to form that handles its high-concept sci-fi premise with great confidence, clever writing, and an incredible amount of heart. It successfully captures the cool, stylish spirit that made the original a classic while delivering a powerful emotional payoff that brings the entire franchise beautifully full circle.

Putting this movie on for a family evening is a magnificent choice that will keep everyone fully entertained, laughing, and genuinely moved by the final scene. It is a sophisticated, highly imaginative crowd-pleaser that proves sometimes looking into the past is the best way to rediscover the magic of a great partnership.
