To solve these mysteries, she forms an unlikely team with an eccentric, institutionalized scientist who used to conduct secret experiments for the government, and his estranged, highly intelligent but cynical son. Together, they form a special law enforcement division that uses unorthodox science to protect the world from fringe technology, eventually uncovering a massive conspiracy that threatens the fabric of reality itself.

The atmosphere of this tv show is dark, atmospheric, and incredibly immersive. The creators do a masterful job balancing a gritty, realistic crime procedural style with high-concept science fiction, creating an underlying sense of dread and wonder that keeps you completely hooked. The pacing is phenomenally handled, using standalone weekly cases to drop subtle clues that build toward a sprawling, multi-layered story about parallel universes and alternate timelines. The visual style uses a cold, clinical color palette that mirrors the scientific themes, punctuated by impressive special effects that make the strange anomalies feel grounded and deeply unsettling.

The acting execution is exceptional, giving the wild scientific concepts a profound sense of human emotion and stakes. Anna Torv is fantastic as the stoic, deeply driven agent, projecting an immense professional strength while gradually revealing a vulnerable, deeply empathetic core. John Noble delivers a flat-out masterpiece of a performance as the brilliant but fractured scientist, effortlessly shifting from childlike innocence and eccentric humor to devastating grief and regret over his past experiments. Joshua Jackson is brilliant as the protective, street-smart son, grounding the dynamic with his sarcastic wit and serving as the emotional bridge between his father’s genius and the real world. Their evolving family bond forms the true, beating heart of the tv show.
