ANOTHER SIMPLE FAVOR

My Take: 8/10

Parental Rating: Young Adults

When the first film arrived, it felt like a breath of fresh air, a cocktail of suburban noir and high-fashion satire. Now, with Another Simple Favor, the stakes are higher, the outfits are even more daring, and the twists are twice as sharp. It is an 8/10 because it understands exactly what made the original a cult favorite: the electric, chaotic chemistry between Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively. As a film creative, I am constantly impressed by how this franchise balances the "mummy vlogger" aesthetic with a dark, sophisticated thriller undercurrent. It’s a stylish game of cat-and-mouse that feels like a modern-day Hitchcock movie, if Hitchcock had a penchant for dry martinis and Italian villas.

The story reunites us with Stephanie and Emily as they head to the sun-drenched coast of Italy for Emily’s high-society wedding. But, as we’ve come to expect, nothing is ever simple when these two are involved. What starts as a celebration quickly devolves into a web of murder, betrayal, and international intrigue. It’s a beautifully shot, fast-paced ride that uses its gorgeous European backdrop to hide some very ugly secrets. It’s a sequel that manages to expand the world without losing the intimate, twisted friendship that serves as the heart of the story.

The Parental Lens

I am recommending this strictly for young adults. The world of A Simple Favor is one of moral ambiguity, sophisticated crime, and very adult relationships. For a young adult, this film is a brilliant study in the "curated life." Just like my favorite shows, Alias and The Diplomat, this story is about women who are managing multiple identities. You can talk to your young adult about the difference between the persona we project to the world, especially on social media, and the reality of who we are behind closed doors. It’s a great entry point to discuss why people feel the need to perform "perfection" and the dangerous lengths they might go to maintain that image.

As a parent, I find the dynamic between Stephanie and Emily to be a fascinating, if extreme, look at female friendship and competition. We often talk to our kids about "toxic" influences, and this film presents that in a heightened, cinematic way. It’s a chance to discuss boundaries and how easily someone’s influence can pull you away from your own values. It asks the question: How much of yourself are you willing to compromise for excitement or for the approval of someone you admire? It’s a sophisticated conversation about self-worth and the importance of staying grounded even when you’re surrounded by glamour and chaos.

From a creative standpoint, the "visual language" of this film is spectacular. Much like Ally McBeal used magical realism to show an inner life, this franchise uses costume design to tell the story. The contrast between Stephanie’s bright, "mummy-blogger" wardrobe and Emily’s sharp, masculine-tailored suits tells you everything you need to know about their power dynamic before they even speak a word. As a creative, I also appreciate the tonal tightrope the director walks, it’s funny, it’s tense, and it’s glamorous all at once. The pacing is relentless, and the way the mystery unfolds is a masterclass in keeping the audience guessing without feeling cheated by the final reveal.

My Final Take

Another Simple Favor is an 8/10 because it’s a rare sequel that actually lives up to the style and wit of the original. it’s a reminder that thrillers don't always have to be gritty and dark; they can be bright, fashionable, and incredibly fun.

My Take is that this is the perfect "guilty pleasure" movie that actually has enough intellectual depth to fuel a real discussion afterward. It’s a reminder for our young adults that while the world might look like a postcard, there is always more to the story. It’s a chic, wickedly smart journey that proves the most dangerous thing in the world isn't a weapon, it’s a woman with a secret and a plan. If you’re looking for a film that is as sharp as a stiletto and twice as dangerous, this is your next movie night sorted.
